Each condition or disease requires an individualized approach. Our veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Rausch, and his team are dedicated to finding the best care plan for your family.

Congenital Heart Disease

Similar to humans, congenital heart disease is a cardiac condition that your pet is born with. Congenital heart disease may be related to your pet’s genetic makeup, and certain breeds are more prone to congenital heart problems than others.

Treatment for congenital heart disease is a lifelong process. At Sunstone, our goal is to help your pet have the highest quality of life possible. Dr. Rauch works with his cardiology team to treat a wide range of congenital heart conditions, including:

  • Atrial septal or ventricular septal defect
  • (Sub)aortic stenosis
  • Mitral valve or tricuspid valve dysplasia
  • Pulmonary hypertension (Eisenmenger’s syndrome)
  • Pulmonic stenosis
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

Age-related or Degenerative Heart Disease

Heart health can change as dogs or cats get older. Some heart conditions, such as valve insufficiency, are the result of normal wear and tear as your pet ages. Others, like myocarditis, are caused by an illness or injury. Diagnosis and treatment depend on many factors, including the type of heart disease, severity of the condition, and your pet’s overall health.

With the right treatment, pets with acquired heart disease can continue to live happy and fulfilling lives. Dr. Rausch and his veterinary cardiology team are committed to providing your pet with the highest quality of life possible. He treats an array of age-related or degenerative heart problems.

Acquired heart diseases in cats or dogs:

  • Degenerative mitral valve disease
  • Tricuspid or semilunar valve insufficiency
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Dilated or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Breed-specific or nutritione-dependent dilated cardiomyopathy

Acquired heart diseases in dogs:

  • Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy in the Boxer
  • Canine myocarditis
  • Canine myocardial infarction

Acquired heart diseases in cats:

  • Feline unrestricted or unclassified cardiomyopathy
  • Feline arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy

Other Heart Conditions

Not all heart conditions involve problems with the heart organ itself. Pets may also have conditions that affect the arteries, veins, or sack around the heart. Problems in these other areas can have a negative impact on your pet’s heart health and are best managed by a skilled veterinary cardiologist.

Our veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Rausch, is committed to providing you and your pet with the exceptional personal care and attention that you both deserve. He and his team have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect heart health, including:

  • Pericardial diseases of small animals
  • Heartworm disease
  • Arterial thromboembolic disease
  • Venous disorders
